Photo Journal: A Candid Day at the Stratford Main Street Festival

What do you get when you close down an entire street, sprinkle in talented artisans, mouthwatering food, and a dash of small-town charm? The Stratford Main Street Festival—a photographer’s dream and my perfect excuse to sneak out of “mom mode” and dive back into street photography.

Life with kids is a constant juggle of diapers, snacks, and sheer chaos, so lugging my camera around for fun isn’t always in the cards. But this time, I made no excuses. The hubs took over diaper duty while I captured the vibrancy of Stratford’s annual “block party.” The energy of Main Street was magnetic—laughter, live music, and the aroma of food trucks lined the air as families and friends celebrated together.

One of the things I love about candid photography is the rawness of the moments I get to freeze. Whether it’s kids with popsicle-sticky faces, vendors passionately talking about their craft, or friends reuniting with hugs, these unscripted moments are pure magic.

After the festival, I shared a gallery with the town’s Facebook group, and the response? Heartwarming. A Greek restaurant vendor, Rita’s Pitas, thanked me for a photo of them hard at work, something they hadn’t had time to do themselves. The joy of giving people a tangible memory to cherish? That’s why I do what I do.

Being behind the lens doesn’t just let me capture stories—it helps me connect with people. During the festival, I met so many passionate small business owners, like Nikkya, at Obodo Serendipity Bookstore in Paradise Green. She’s doing incredible things for the neighborhood, from hosting book readings to planning community events like their recent Mother’s Day celebration. It reminded me why I love being a photographer and a community cheerleader.

As a Connecticut and New York-based photographer, capturing life’s special moments is my bread and butter. But events like these—filled with the essence of togetherness—are a beautiful reminder that photography isn’t just about images. It’s about memories, connection, and celebrating the magic of right now.

A Little Story: My First Fairfield Session

Let me set the scene: a sunny afternoon at a Fairfield County park, with a family of four which included the silliest fresh new double digit kid. He’s too cool to be doing cute poses… embrace it! Let him go absolute ham, maybe he can show us the newest Tik Tok dance! The parents? Beaming. As we wandered through the trails, snapping candid moments, I realized just how special it is to capture the essence of a family in a new setting and embracing . This is why I do what I do.

Family, Fun and a Little Dirt: Capturing Field Day Magic

“These Field Day photos capture the energy, laughter, and unforgettable moments of a family tradition filled with games like tug-of-war, sack races, and wheelbarrow races. From candid smiles to action-packed shots, these images showcase the beauty of authentic, unposed photography. Perfect for celebrating family, fun, and life’s best memories.

Young black girls having fun at the park playing tug of war with cousins.

Every year, my dear friend (let’s call her the queen of fun) throws an epic “Field Day”—and I mean epic. Imagine a mashup of your family reunion, summer camp, and the Olympics, but with more laughter and slightly less coordination. This isn’t just a casual picnic with sandwiches and polite conversation. Oh no. This is tug-of-war, three-legged, and wheelbarrow races where the participants might not have their balance, but they sure have their dignity… well, most of it.

When she asked me to photograph the event, I jumped at the chance. First, I’d do anything for her because she’s my friend. Second, because events like these are my jam. Something about capturing people in their element—sweaty, laughing, mid-fall, or mid-victory lap—makes the photos feel alive. It’s the magic of real moments, where no one’s saying, “Okay, now tilt your chin slightly to the left.”

Field Day is the perfect reminder that not every photo session has to be cookie-cutter or full of posed smiles and perfectly coordinated outfits (although, shoutout to anyone who managed to wear matching team shirts this year—you’re the real MVPs). The beauty is in the chaos, in the moments that make you snort-laugh when you see them later. Like that one uncle who gave it his all in the sack race and wiped out so spectacularly that his glasses flew off… but hey, he stuck the landing with a smile. Or the spur of the moment rap battle.

That’s the thing about life: it’s messy, funny, and sometimes downright ridiculous. And when you look back at the photos years from now, those are the moments you’ll treasure. Not the stiff poses, but the candid laughs, the sweat-soaked hugs, the competitive streaks that turned your calm cousin into a sprinting blur.

Photographing Field Day was a masterclass in why I love what I do. It’s not about creating a perfect moment—it’s about recognizing that the moments we’re already living are perfect in their imperfection. It’s the kid double-fisting popsicles, the aunt who came out of retirement to dominate musical chairs, and the look on everyone’s faces when they finally sat down to eat after hours of friendly but ferocious competition.

So, if you’re thinking about capturing your own family traditions, let me just say this: Don’t stress about the poses. Don’t worry about everyone looking “just right.” The best photos come from simply being yourselves. And if that involves a little dirt, sweat, and your team breaking into a victory chant… even better.

Life isn’t staged, so why should your photos be?

And to my friend: thank you for letting me document the joy, the hilarity, and the slightly chaotic brilliance of Field Day. I’m already sharpening my camera skills for next year—because I know it’ll be bigger, better, and possibly include water balloons. Just saying.

Travel: Bermuda 2018: The Right Colors

You know that feeling where you’re somewhere new, and all restrictions go out the door? Well, that was definitely my mindset for this vacation. The twins were out and breathing! I guess they wanted to feel that Bermudian breeze.
Getting around Bermuda was pretty easy, not only was everyone extremely helpful and friendly…. the offline map I downloaded before landing has been on point! (See more tips for traveling here.) I’m roaming around everywhere like this is my home town. Except there are no angry New Yorkers anywhere, yay!

Kat and I roamed Saint George’s, really wanting to see the famous unfinished church. It has these gorgeous archways with no ceiling covering anything. The beautiful blue sky shines between each pillar. The church was never finished and it’s now used for events like weddings…. check this out. I’m sure it’s a pretty penny, but those wedding pictures will be completely worth it! (Look at me talking, like I even have a boo)
We tried our best to peak through different archways. We couldn’t really get in. We ran over to St. Peter’s Church real quick, where I figured my boobs needed to be covered a bit.. luckily for me Kat had a shirt I could throw over my dress before going in. The church seemed old and small.
Soon enough we were running back to Town Hall. We saw a posting for a glass-bottom boat tour and we wanted every single part of it. We were escorted to the boat that was waiting for us, already inside were two ladies who we found out later were from Jersey. We also met Philip, aka as Phoopa and his skipper.
Oh my, guys… let me tell you how amazing this experience was. The wind was blowing in our faces, the little droplets of water hit our skin, the sun is beaming, the music is blasting while we’re in the open sea. We stop by a drive though sort of thing, but for boats. Kat and I order a 6 pack of beer. The girls across from us do the same after thinking about it twice.
Phoopa gives us some history about Bermuda, and then proceeds to tell us why he’s considered everyone’s uncle. After a few minutes of spending time with him, I can see exactly why. He is so endearing and his energy is just gravitating.
In the water we see the famous golden mermaid, it’s a tiny statue that sticks out of the water. Phoopa doesn’t really explain how it got there, and once I got home and started googling, I had no luck either. My only guess is that it’s from one of the shipwrecks, and that tiny piece just happens to be sticking out. There are so many shipwrecks here, I had so much fun trying to find different boats in the water. I’m sure it wasn’t that fun for the poor sailors who had to abandon ship.
Phoopa kept playing Chronixx’s song, I Can…. this was the first time I heard it.. and it wasn’t the last. The song was on repeat the whole time and I wasn’t complaining. By the time the 3-hour tour was over, Kat and I knew all the lyrics. It was so catchy!
When the tour was over, Phoopa dropped us off at The Grotto Bay Resort. Our Airbnb host provided us with towels, and luckily for us, it matched the hotel’s perfectly. Which only meant we blended right in. We walked about 15 feet until Kat realized she forgot her phone on the boat. She had left it charging near the captain’s steering wheel. We remembered Phoopa had mentioned he had an evening cruise pick up, and we ran back to luckily see him there. He put on his favorite song and we danced while at the dock. He invited us back into the water, and mentioned how much he liked our energy, this sunset cruise will be on the house… or (cough cough on the boat) We gladly said yes, and hopped right back in the boat!
Though we didn’t get to see the sunset because it was pretty overcast, I didn’t think anything could compete with the view we had in the morning.
Bermuda at night is magical. The stars were shining so bright in that dark sky. I kept looking up, and was just awe at how breathtaking life is. God, I’m so lucky.
Phoopa threw the anchor in the water, and his handy skipper jumped in to bring the boat a little closer to shore. We all stripped down, and he explained a workaround on one of the Bermudian Laws. It’s illegal to come up to land on a private beach in Bermuda….. but not by open waters!
We pulled up to the private island, that we passed by earlier and was filled with models. The clothing brand Revolve was there earlier, and all I saw was beautiful people in bathing suits playing volleyball and blasting music. Now the tiny beach was empty, silent, gorgeous pink sand just staring back at me.
Yes, you read that right, the pink sand was absolutely gorgeous. It’s not as vibrant as we see in pictures, but from far you see the pink tones glisten, and from up close, when you hold the sand in your hands you see the tiny little pink sand blended with the beige sand and it just looks so cool! The sand feels like cotton on the bottom of our feet.
Phoopa screamed at me” You’re wearing the right colors!” and I laughed and said, ” I keep getting that, I don’t get it” He told me there was a big cricket game going on, and the team everyone roots for is blue. When he saw Kat step out the boat with a red bathing suit, he yelled out” Omg, what are you wearing!?” She could only yell back, “I didn’t know!”
This has to be what a Yankees and Red Sox fans feel like.
