Dominican Republic. Day 6, 7 &8: Horrid Pain

Four molars removed at the same time. I sat in that chair with no idea of what I was about to go through.Dr.V said I had stubborn molars. She used so much anestesia on me. I tried not to flinch but I was getting tired. She asked if I wanted to stop and split the process into two. I insisted on her removing all 4 at the same time Might as well get it over with all the same time.

Plus, if you give me time to think about it, I might  not come back. She mentioned with all my tattoos this would be a piece of cake.

It wasn´t.1

About an hour later I was a mouthful minus 4 with a numb mouth. A lot of ice for the swelling and a a lot of prescribed drugs. Antibiotics and inflamatory pills.

On the way home, finally I broke into chills, which is weird because hello, I’m in D.R. it’s freaking hot over here. I begged for a quilt and my Tia (aunt) Olga ended up giving me more pills. I was running a fever.

I knocked out and the next day, my face looked like it was pregnant one side.

Since the doc removed 4, 3 of my molars were already out and grown, the other however, was still somewhere in my gums, chilling. But with all the drilling she did to get it out, the right side of my face is growing bigger by the minute.2

It’s not even pain, it’s the discomfort it’s unbearable.

I feel ugly.

It doesnt help that my hair looks like shit either. Ever since we went to the beach I havent really even bothered to do it. And my natural poof isnt so pretty anymore. I used to have long beautiful curls. Now it’s all damaged from hair dyes and chemicals, not that it’s gonna stop me from changing my hair all the time.

This post went from pain to hair.

ay.

Dominican Republic. Day 5: Señora de Altagracia

1 2 3Today was a mini road trip. 3 hours each way. My cousin Edward drove with a beer in hand, while we made our way to Higuey and La Romana.

We were gonna go see one of the most famous churches in Dominican Republic.

Basílica Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia.
A(local children out of school and walking on the side of broken streets in the heat)

I know I came here when I was 10, but of course I don’t remember much about it’s history.

I know it’s a Roman Catholic church and mu cousin Yenny tells me people from all over the world come to make promises and ask for blessings. Many come crawling on their knees all the way from the main gate to enter the church, others come dressed in all white.

My abuela (grandmother) says, people come ready to came out and sleep on the floor to get a shot at first in line.B(Los Montes = The mountains) C(sugar cane workers)

On the 21st of January

”Este es el primer santuario de América y en él se aglutina el 21 de enero de todos los años millares de dominicanos para rendirle culto a la Virgen de la Altagracia.”

This is the first sanctuary  of America and on the 21st of January many gather and unite , especially thousands of Dominican to surrender worship to the Virgin of Altagracia.

4I loved all the candles. Especially when I caught them flickering.

5.2My cousin Yenny and I, right in front of the infamous church.

Aren’t touristy shots cheesy?

hahahaha
5 6My cousin Franklin getting down and dirty, making sure his picture taking is perfect!7Let me tell you, these cheeses ( the round white balls in the bag) are absolutely delicious!

I remember when my abuela used to come to visit in NY and I always made sure I was the first one to have these Quesos de Hoja en Blanco ( cheeses of white sheets) they have like this bitter taste that is super addicting. Of course while driving we had to stop and buy a few for the road. We got some crackers to match and some Presidente beers8After visiting the church we decided to stop at a local beach by the name of  Bayahibe. It was mostly empty on the side we decided to settle down in. There were mostly tourists, I’m sure there was a hotel around somewhere.

9What I found interesting was that there was  a cemetery right behind us. Do you see the tombstones behind me? 10 11

Dominican Republic. Day 4: Dentist

There’s not much to say about today. I decided to attempt to fix my mouth. I´m ashamed to say I haven’t gotten to a dentist in forever. I’m always in pain and sometimes I feel like my teeth are shifting. Whenver I would mention it to Q he would just look at me a little weird.

So now that I’m here, my godmother recommended a dentist who has done almost everyones mouth in my family.( that sounded pervy) and she was cheaper than any other dentist in the US. I had no choice but to get my ass to that dentist chair for a consultation.

Apparently, I’m not crazy, my teeth have been shifting. I have molars that are still trying to grow out, yet have no space since I already have a mouth full of teeth. So my teeth shift trying to make more space and they’re just pushed on top of one of other. Yuck.

So I have to get 4 molars removed (Ouch) have to get 2 cavities filled in (ew) and have a root canal that needs to be re done.

So I have a lot of work to do, and as painful as I know that’s gonna be, I know it needs to get done and it will all be worth while.  Dr. V isisted on working right away so I can heal before I take my flight back home, and if I don’t do anything about it now, all my teeth will be on top of each other. And though its not mandatory yet, braces are recomended.

I already picture Q teasing me, calling me names.

Brace Face.

Train Tracks

Metal mouth.

I ended going to get my xray done, which took me longer in the waiting room than the actual consultation (grrrrr…) I was pretty upset, because the lady doctor insisted I remove the piercings from my face. So I’m thinking maybe it would mess up the machine somehow, metal and stuff. So when I complained about my nose ring not being able to be removed since it was adjusted with pliers, I had already taken off my septum ring, and she decides to tell me, don’t worry about ti, its not that serious. Its just so it wont come out in the pic.

-_-  Really?

I  was pretty upset bc while attempting to put my septum back in, one of the little balls at the end decided to fall and now I’m stuck with a ball less ring. Coño.

Anyway, check out my teeth. You can already see the metal in my mouth from 2 previous cavaties and a root canal. I don’t even know how my teeth are so messed up bc I’,m not a sweets person. Oh, and peep my nose ring making an appearance!DSC08681

Ps. I ended up paying $400 pesos for the xray, which is basically like $10 USD. Let me take my ass to NY and they’ll charge me like $300 USD

1A documentary and a public family event hosted by Marthalicia.

Throughout the summer of 2013, cameras followed four New York City artists as they joined others at 5 Pointz,

a well-known quarter in Queens, NY, where artists from all over come out to create art and celebrate freedom of expression by showcasing their art across building walls.

The artists took to the famed brick canvas to paint the phrase “The Artist Process” captured it all on film.

Acclaimed New York City “live art performer”

“We all live in NYC, so we all have a rhythm…These are just

layers, you can say, of all the art that has been expressed here…

I hope this event can show and tell people there is a lot of love

for the creating and hopefully this love can equal positive energy.”

The Artist Process,

*The mission for this documentary, is to help non visual artist and artist alike to share their skills to the public.

*The mission of the mural is to work collectively with others, with the sounds provided by the musical performers and poets, as the b-boys and b-girls dance to the rhythm of both the spoken and harmony of the sounds/beats.

Hopefully the public can witness the love we have for what we do, and in return appreciate the struggles of the artist to help understand our need to keep the arts thriving and living, if not for our life time, but for our children’s life time.

“The Artist Process”is a documentary in the lives of New York City artist. The purpose of creating these documentaries or such event is to educate those that are unaware and unfamiliar to the many artist that we have present in our life time, that are utilizing their talents for the betterment of today’s youth. Those that participated in the 2009 summer “T.A.P.”that was held in 5 POINTZ, Queens, can tell you how of a great impact it was for them and others to unite together and perform to the public. This time around, a new twist and idea came about to better help bring a closer view to how the artist see themselves and their art.Meet the ARTIST for the 2013 visual Showcase: 2

Together we can show the POWER of ART through our Love and devotion , by demonstrating our sense of Community through the arts ! 3

My Mr.Minx dropped me off in Queens and hurried along to work, trying not to be late.

The heat was unbearable and I know I wasn’t the only one feeling it.

When I got there everyone was working their butt off, spray paint everywhere and the music blasting.
3b

I dressed as comfy as I possibly could, knowing I was gonna stain all my clothes anyway.

I decided to work with spray paint and acrylic.

Just to get a bit more detailed in my work.4

My main focus most of the time was the hair….

oh maaaaan, it took me fooooorever!

and in that heat I was cranky, not to mention that I didn’t eat before I got there.4a

Everyone was so nice, networking and cracking jokes.

This Artist Process was part 3, and my second to date. I attended and painted on the first one and not the second one. You can see that post here.
5

There was so many little kids running around, dancing, breaking, painting and “borrowing” our supplies.

It was so cute to see these kids grasp onto their environment and replicate it so easily.5b

I had the pleasure of meeting and painting alongside (in between) both very talented artists, Cortes and Sek3.

6

Cortes had the letter C, in blue and grey skulls, with red ones in the background… he made it look so simple and finished it so quickly, 1-2-3.

His shadows and highlights were great.

6a

Sek 3 was pretty damn dope and broke out in a very patriotic piece in red and blue with stars and polka dots….

oooooo…..polka dots ♥

But I have to admit, my favorite part of his piece was the use of burgundy shadows. 7My friend Randy came through to show some support and I pout him to work really quick.

I handed him my camera and he got snapping.7b

He was pretty good to, I was impressed.

Since I was so busy painting,I knew I wasn’t going to have to much time to get all the shots of this event like I wanted to.

Let alone, pics of me at work.8

The bestfriend Misha came through and I know she was pretty upset she forgot her SD memory card at home and wasn’t able to take any pics at all.

8b

After everyone was done painting, and yes.. I was one of the last ones to actually finish painting, due to the fact that I was working with brushes.

But it was all for the better, since all eyes were on me!9

It’s funny though, because we were all required to submit in a sketch for the respective letter that was given to us, and yes I submitted mine in..

but what I painted was completely different from what I ended up painting.
9b

A few steps away the music was blasting and many were dancing.

There was a Bboy, Bgirl competition  hosted by Chief 69 going on, and everyone was going in .

Winner, $200.

Aoooow!
10

On the side  there was ArtistNameLong getting his juices flowing and painting the mural DURING the time it’s actually getting painted.

That must be so difficult.

Not only painting what’s not finished, blocked by everyone in the way, but have to duplicate everyone’s work in the process.

I can’t wait to see the end result!

(He’ll be mailing me the end result, so you guys better stay tuned for that)

24

After all the commotion, Philartiste, Misha, Randy and I went to a diner to catch up and talk silliness.

I ended up ordering a Philly cheese steak that was way too small, but delicious.
10b

Our waitress was super rude which gave us more ammo to start cracking up.11

We walked back to 5 ptz, since the sun went down and was actually better weather… ( so much for that storm that was supposed to happen)

and went inside to see an exhibit, a very sexual exhibit might I add.

11a

The canvases, prints and displays all were incorporated with sex.

Sex tools.

The female and male body.

Pain.

Submission.

the list goes on and on…..

It was actually pretty cool.

12

The day was great.
